Biography

Catherine Romania is a detail-oriented, experienced and trusted advisor who listens to and works closely with her clients to achieve their goals. She focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning, estate administration and business succession planning. She is also a skilled mediator.

Whether representing prosperous clients needing sophisticated, complex, estate plans to transfer wealth while minimizing taxes or clients motivated solely with family harmony, Catherine has the knowledge and skill to prepare the necessary wills, revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, special needs trusts, supplemental needs trusts, operating agreements, shareholder agreements, real estate transfer documents, and other business or estate planning documents required. She also ensures clients are protected in the case of incapacity, including discussing the choice of agents for and preparing powers of attorney, living wills/advance health care directives and guardianships.

In the area of estate administration, she works with fiduciaries and family members in post-mortem tax planning, preparation of federal estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax returns, New York state estate tax returns and New Jersey inheritance tax returns and audits of the returns. Realizing that the death of a loved one is a difficult time, and can also result in conflict, her skills as a mediator assist in the dissipation of family discord.

Catherine is accredited by the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators as a business and commercial mediator. She also maintains qualifications to serve on both the civil and family court mediation rosters. As such she has served as a neutral to successfully facilitate agreement among parties in numerous business, probate and family economic disputes.

Notwithstanding her busy practice, Catherine is involved in the legal community as an active member of a number of organizations including having served as a member and Chair of the District X Fee Arbitration Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and a member and Chair of the District XA Ethics Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and past president and current Director on the Board of Directors of the Estate Planning Council of Northern New Jersey. Additionally, she frequently contributes to the NJMoneyHelp.com and Bamboozled column in NJ.com and has lectured and has had articles published in the field of estate planning.
