Biography
Leonard J. Witman is a senior tax and estate planning attorney at the firm of Witman Stadtmauer, P.A. He is a respected authority in tax, estate, retirement benefits and deferred compensation law and a well-known national lecturer and author on these subjects. Before entering private practice, Lenny worked as a Tax Law Specialist in the Employee Plans and Exempt Organizations Division for the Internal Revenue Service.
Lenny has extensive experience counseling clients regarding employee benefits such as 401(k) plans, profit sharing plans, defined benefit plans, cash balance plans, 403(b) plans, 457 plans, executive compensation, non-qualified deferred compensation, 409A compliance, health and other welfare benefit plans, cafeteria (Section 125) plans and other fringe benefits. In addition, he represents clients in audits before government agencies.
In 2020, Lenny was awarded the Dorothy G. Black Distinguished Service Award. This award recognized his distinguished service to the Trust and Estate part of the Real Property, Trust and Estate law section of the New Jersey State Bar Association for his work in trust and estate law in New Jersey. Lenny has held numerous leadership roles in professional organizations, including the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (serving as the former New Jersey chair) and the American College of Employee Benefit Counsel. He has chaired the New Jersey State Bar Association Employee Benefits Committee and Taxation Section. He is also the author of books and has taught law at Seton Hall Law School and Rutgers University Graduate Business School. Lenny has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America each year since 1995 and has been recognized as a New Jersey Super Lawyers.
